Radio frequency interference, or RFI, can make amateur radio feel broken even when your radio and antenna are working fine.
You turn on the radio and hear buzzing.
Or clicking.
Or a wide wall of noise.
Or a strange pulse that shows up every few seconds.
Sometimes the noise is weak enough to ignore. Sometimes it wipes out whole bands.
The good news is that many RFI problems can be found with patience, a simple process, and a few basic tools.
You do not need to be an engineer to start hunting noise.
You need to be methodical.
What Is RFI?
RFI stands for radio frequency interference.
In plain language, it means something is making unwanted radio noise.
That noise may come from:
- Power supplies
- Battery chargers
- LED lights
- Solar equipment
- Computers
- Routers
- TVs
- Appliances
- Wall warts
- USB chargers
- Vehicle electronics
- Dash cams
- Phone chargers
- Cheap power inverters
Some devices are noisy because they are poorly designed.
Some are noisy because they are failing.
Some are only noisy when connected to a certain cable, accessory, antenna, or power source.
Start With a Simple Question
Before you start unplugging everything in sight, ask:
Where do I hear the noise?
Write down:
- The band or frequency
- The signal strength
- The sound of the noise
- Whether it is constant or pulsing
- Whether it changes with time of day
- Whether it changes when the antenna is disconnected
- Whether it changes when you move the radio
This helps you avoid guessing.
If the noise disappears when you disconnect the antenna, the noise is probably being received through the antenna system.
If the noise is still there with the antenna disconnected, the problem may be inside the radio, power supply, or nearby wiring.
Use an AM Radio
One of the simplest RFI hunting tools is a portable AM broadcast radio.
Tune it between stations where you hear mostly static.
Then walk around.
Many noisy devices will make the AM radio buzz, growl, click, or squeal as you get closer.
This works because AM radios are very good at hearing certain types of electrical noise.
Try holding the radio near:
- Wall warts
- Power strips
- LED lamps
- Battery chargers
- Routers
- Computers
- TVs
- Solar inverters
- Breaker panels
- Vehicle dashboards
- USB adapters
If the noise gets louder near a device, you may have found a suspect.
It does not prove that device is the only problem, but it gives you a place to start.
Turn Off Breakers One at a Time
For house noise, the breaker panel is often the fastest way to narrow the search.
If you can do this safely, turn off one breaker at a time while listening to the noise on your radio.
Do not turn off breakers that power medical equipment, critical systems, refrigerators for long periods, or anything unsafe to interrupt.
If a breaker makes the noise disappear, you have narrowed the problem to that circuit.
Then turn that breaker back on and start unplugging devices on that circuit.
This is much faster than guessing across the whole house.
Unplug Devices, Do Not Just Turn Them Off
Many devices still run part of their power supply even when the front-panel switch is off.
That is why unplugging matters.
If you suspect something, unplug it from the wall.
Common troublemakers include:
- Phone chargers
- Laptop chargers
- Wall warts
- Aquarium lights
- LED strip lights
- Smart speakers
- Cable boxes
- Battery chargers
- Tool chargers
- Cheap USB power supplies
- Network equipment
- Touch lamps
- Dimmers
After each change, listen again.
If the noise drops, you found something important.
If nothing changes, plug it back in and move to the next device.
Check Wall Warts Carefully
Wall warts are small plug-in power supplies.
They are everywhere now.
Some are quiet.
Some are terrible.
A bad wall wart can radiate noise through the air, through house wiring, or through the device cable attached to it.
Check the ones powering:
- Routers
- Modems
- Ethernet switches
- Security cameras
- LED decorations
- Weather stations
- Battery chargers
- Speakers
- Clocks
- Desk lights
If unplugging one makes the noise stop, replace it with a better supply or add filtering if appropriate.
Watch for LED Lights
LED lighting is a common RFI source.
The light itself may be fine, but the driver circuit can be noisy.
Check:
- LED bulbs
- Shop lights
- Under-cabinet lights
- Outdoor floodlights
- Dimmer switches
- LED strips
- Holiday lights
Try turning the lights off and unplugging them if possible.
If a dimmer is involved, test at different brightness levels.
Some dimmers are quiet at one setting and noisy at another.
Check Computers and Network Gear
Computers and network equipment can create wide noise.
Look at:
- Desktop computers
- Monitors
- Laptop chargers
- USB hubs
- Ethernet cables
- Network switches
- Routers
- Powerline Ethernet adapters
- External hard drives
Powerline Ethernet adapters deserve special attention because they intentionally put signals onto house wiring.
That can be a big problem for HF reception.
Use a Battery Test
If your radio can run from battery power, try it.
Run the radio from a battery with the house power still on.
Then turn off the main breaker if you can safely do so.
If the noise disappears when the house power is off, the source is likely inside your home.
If the noise remains, it may be coming from a neighbor, utility equipment, street lighting, solar gear, or something else nearby.
Do this safely.
If you are not comfortable around electrical panels, get help.
Finding RFI in a Vehicle
Vehicle RFI can be just as frustrating.
You may hear noise only when:
- The engine is running
- The key is in accessory mode
- A charger is plugged in
- Headlights are on
- The blower motor is running
- A dash cam is powered
- A fuel pump is active
- A phone cable is connected
Start with the easy accessories first.
Unplug:
- USB chargers
- Phone cables
- Dash cams
- GPS units
- Bluetooth adapters
- Power inverters
- Aftermarket lights
- Accessory radios
- 12-volt splitters
Many vehicle noise problems come from add-on accessories rather than the vehicle itself.
Pull Fuses Carefully
If unplugging accessories does not find it, pulling fuses can help narrow the circuit.
Use the vehicle manual and be careful.
Do not pull fuses for safety systems while driving.
Do not test in traffic.
Do this parked, safely, and with good notes.
Pull one fuse, listen, record the result, then put it back before moving to the next one.
If pulling a fuse makes the noise disappear, you now know which circuit deserves attention.
Listen for Patterns
Different noise sources often sound different.
A switching power supply may make a buzz or hash.
Ignition noise may change with engine speed.
Digital electronics may make ticking, pulsing, or sweeping sounds.
LED drivers may create wide noise that changes when dimmed.
A motor may create noise that starts only when the motor runs.
You do not need to identify every sound perfectly.
Patterns simply help you decide where to look next.
Move the Antenna or Radio
Location matters.
Move a portable radio around the room, yard, or vehicle.
If the noise gets stronger near a device, cable, wall, or panel, that is a clue.
For HF antennas, moving the antenna farther from the house can make a huge difference.
Sometimes the fix is not removing every noise source.
Sometimes the fix is getting the antenna away from the noise.
Use Chokes and Ferrites
Ferrite chokes can help reduce RFI on cables.
They are especially useful when noise is traveling along:
- Power cables
- USB cables
- Ethernet cables
- Coax shields
- Speaker wires
- Control cables
Use the right ferrite material for the frequency range you are trying to fix.
For HF problems, many hams use mix 31 ferrites.
For VHF and UHF, other materials may be more useful.
Ferrites are helpful, but they are not magic. If a device is extremely noisy, replacement may be better than trying to filter it forever.
Keep Notes
RFI hunting can get confusing fast.
Keep a simple log:
- Date and time
- Frequency
- Signal strength
- What you turned off
- What you unplugged
- What changed
- What did not change
This matters when the problem is intermittent.
It also helps when you ask other hams for help.
Do Not Forget Your Own Station
Sometimes the noise is not from the house.
Sometimes it is from your station setup.
Check:
- Radio power supply
- Computer next to the radio
- USB interface
- Sound card
- Monitor
- Network cable
- Antenna tuner
- Amplifier
- Cheap coax jumpers
- Loose connectors
Try disconnecting station accessories one at a time.
If the noise disappears, you have a lead.
A Practical RFI Hunt Order
Here is a simple order that works well:
- Listen and write down the problem.
- Disconnect the antenna and see if the noise changes.
- Run the radio from battery if possible.
- Use an AM radio to search nearby devices.
- Turn off breakers one at a time if safe.
- Unplug devices on the noisy circuit.
- Check wall warts, chargers, LED lights, and network gear.
- In a vehicle, unplug accessories first.
- Pull vehicle fuses carefully if needed.
- Add ferrites or replace the noisy device.
- Move the antenna farther from noise when possible.
- Keep notes so you can prove what helped.
Be a Good Neighbor
If the noise appears to come from outside your home, slow down and be careful.
Do not accuse a neighbor without evidence.
Try to confirm the source first.
If you need to talk with someone, be polite and simple. Most people do not know their charger, light, or power supply might be causing radio noise.
Offer to help solve the problem.
That works much better than showing up angry with a radio in your hand.
The Simple Version
Most RFI troubleshooting is patient elimination.
Turn things off.
Unplug things.
Listen carefully.
Change one thing at a time.
Take notes.
Do not assume the most expensive device is the problem.
Do not assume the newest device is innocent.
Start with wall warts, chargers, LED lights, network gear, and vehicle accessories. Those are common offenders and easy to test.
