600 Projects, Experiments, Builds, Challenges, and Adventures

A practical idea catalog for new operators, experienced hams, makers, programmers, electronics experimenters, clubs, educators, and anyone who has ever wondered what comes after getting the license.

Amateur radio has an image problem. Ask someone outside the hobby what hams do and the answer often collapses into one picture: people talking into microphones. That is certainly part of amateur radio, but it is nowhere close to the whole thing.

Amateur radio can be operating, electronics, software development, networking, satellites, embedded systems, data analysis, emergency communications, competitive operating, citizen science, outdoor adventure, antenna engineering, digital signal processing, automation, fabrication, restoration, radio astronomy, or simply talking to another human being through a radio you understand.

This guide is deliberately huge. The internet has plenty of "Top 10 Ham Radio Projects" lists. This is not one of them. The goal here is to show the breadth of the hobby and give you enough ideas that you can keep coming back whenever you need a new rabbit hole.

The most useful way to read it is not from beginning to end. Scan the sections that sound like you. If you are a programmer, jump to software, SDR, networking, and automation. If you like building, start with antennas, RF electronics, fabrication, and test equipment. If you want to get outside, look at POTA, SOTA, satellites, fox hunting, and balloons. If you like science, go directly to propagation, weak-signal work, and radio astronomy.

There is no single correct way to do amateur radio. The better question is: What do you want to build, learn, measure, or try next?

Project Markers

Throughout the catalog, two markers call out especially useful entry points:

  • Star means Great First Project. The project has a relatively low barrier to entry, teaches transferable skills, produces a satisfying result, and does not require a long chain of prerequisites.
  • RX radio waves means No Transmit Required. The project can be meaningfully completed in a receive-only, bench, software, simulation, analysis, restoration, or non-transmitting form without an amateur license. Transmitting on amateur frequencies still requires the appropriate license and privileges.

A project can carry both markers. Those are especially good choices for someone who is curious about amateur radio but has not earned a license yet.

How To Read The Catalog

  • Difficulty: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, or Expert. This is approximate. A project can often be simplified or expanded.
  • Cost: $ generally means under about $50, $$ about $50-$200, $$$ about $200-$750, and $$$$ means the sky, your tower, or your spouse may become involved.
  • Skills: The primary skills the project develops. Most projects cross several disciplines.
  • License: U.S.-oriented shorthand only. Receiving, building, simulation, and bench testing often do not require an amateur license, while transmitting on amateur frequencies does. Actual privileges depend on license class, band, mode, frequency, power, control method, and current FCC rules. Verify the rules before transmitting.

How to Use This Catalog Without Reading All 600 Projects

This is intentionally not a Top 10 list. Use the catalog as a map. Pick a section that matches something you already enjoy, look for ⭐ Great First Project, or look for the RX radio-wave marker if you are not licensed yet or want receive-only, bench, software, simulation, analysis, restoration, or other non-transmitting projects. Complete one project, then use its section's Start Here path to decide what should come next.

Pick a Path Instead of a Project

With hundreds of choices, sometimes the easiest way to start is to follow a path. These are not rigid curricula. They are sequences that let one project naturally teach the skills needed for the next.

I just got my license

Local repeater -> simplex -> build a 2 m antenna -> APRS -> portable operating -> POTA -> HF -> digital modes -> satellites -> build something of your own.

I am a computer nerd

RTL-SDR -> CAT control -> digital modes -> APRS-IS -> Raspberry Pi radio appliance -> MQTT -> GNU Radio -> AREDN -> propagation analytics -> custom radio software.

I like electronics

Dipole -> dummy load -> SWR bridge -> NanoVNA -> filter -> balun -> oscillator -> receiver -> QRP transmitter -> complete transceiver.

I like Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi

Station display -> sensor node -> telemetry -> antenna switch -> rotor controller -> APRS tracker -> remote station -> autonomous monitoring site.

I want to do science

WSPR receiver -> propagation database -> SDR -> RBN/PSKReporter analysis -> precision frequency measurement -> eclipse or space-weather observations -> radio astronomy -> citizen-science contribution.

I want something ridiculous

Meteor scatter -> automated satellite ground station -> distributed RDF -> radio astronomy -> custom digital modem -> autonomous RF network -> EME.

A Few Important Starting Points

Several established amateur-radio organizations maintain deep technical material that can take these ideas much further:

  • ARRL covers operating modes and systems including voice, CW,

digital data, image modes, weak-signal work, remote control, satellites, QRP, EME, and technical specialties.

  • AMSAT maintains getting-started and operating material for amateur

satellites, including FM, SSB/CW, digital satellites, telemetry, antennas, tracking, and station design.

  • HamSCI connects amateur-radio observations with citizen science

and professional research. Its projects use data from systems such as WSPRNet, PSKReporter, and the Reverse Beacon Network to study the ionosphere and related phenomena.

  • AREDN applies amateur radio to resilient IP networking and can

support services such as chat, VoIP, mapping, video, monitoring, and other network applications over RF links.

  • Winlink provides radio email and supports messaging over radio

pathways when normal internet connectivity is unavailable.

  • APRS is much more than vehicle tracking. It supports real-time

packet-based position, messaging, telemetry, weather, and tactical information.

Master Resource Library

Online documentation is usually best for software, protocols, active satellites, and services that change frequently. Books are often better for coherent treatments of RF theory, antennas, electronics, measurement, and station engineering. Use both.

Core Bookshelf

  • The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communications - Broad technical reference for electronics, RF systems, receivers, transmitters, DSP, construction, test equipment, and station engineering.
  • The ARRL Antenna Book - Deep antenna reference covering theory, propagation, feed lines, construction, measurement, portable systems, VHF/UHF, and specialty antennas.
  • The ARRL Operating Manual - Broad operating reference covering the practical side of getting on the air.
  • Grounding and Bonding for the Radio Amateur - Focused reference for AC safety, lightning protection, bonding, and RF-current management.
  • Experimental Methods in RF Design - A classic build-and-measure reference. Some software and references are dated, so pair it with current documentation.
  • Getting Started with Amateur Satellites from AMSAT - Focused satellite guide covering tracking, antennas, radios, FM and linear satellites, digital data, operating technique, and station upgrades.
  • Get on the Air with HF Digital - Practical entry point for operators moving into computer-assisted HF modes.

Resource rule

Use primary documentation first when a project depends on a protocol, software package, radio command set, regulation, or safety limit. Use books for deeper theory that does not become obsolete every software release. Community guides and videos are excellent for seeing how other people solved practical problems, but critical technical and regulatory details should be checked against primary material.

The Point

Amateur radio is not one activity. It is a technical sandbox with a callsign attached.

You can spend an evening talking on a repeater. You can spend a weekend activating a park. You can spend six months designing an RF board. You can write software that watches propagation across the planet, build an antenna from hardware-store parts, receive telemetry from a spacecraft, launch your own telemetry package under a balloon, create an off-grid IP network, restore a radio older than you are, or try to bounce a signal off the Moon.

You can spend $25. You can spend $25,000. You can operate from an apartment, a mountaintop, a vehicle, a school, a club station, a backpack, or a rack full of servers and radios.

And you do not have to enjoy every part of it.

That may be the most important point of all. Amateur radio is broad enough that two licensed operators can spend decades in the hobby and have almost no overlap in what they actually do.

So if amateur radio has started to feel repetitive, do not assume you have reached the end of the hobby.

You may have simply reached the edge of one corner of it. Pick another project.
